The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is hosting the “Global City Teams Challenge – Smart and Secure Cities and Communities Challenge” in Washington, D.C. from July 10-12. The competition brings together hundreds of technology teams that have developed smart solutions to address the issues faced by cities and communities.

NIST launched the challenge in 2014 due to the current state of innovation in the Smart Cities field, an area in which many development efforts are isolated projects. With the competition, NIST aims to encourage collaboration and development of standards in Smart City solutions. Overall, the institute believes that these technologies will enable cities and communities to improve services, promote economic growth and enhance the quality of life.

According to NIST, the competition´s long-term goal is to “establish and demonstrate replicable, scalable and sustainable models for incubation and deployment of interoperable, standard-based solutions using advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things and Cyber-Physical Systems, and demonstrate their measurable growth in communities and cities.”

The event is co-hosted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).

Although the event officially kicks off on July 10, only invitation-only events will be held that day. Public events and activities will begin on July 11. Check out the agenda here.

The event is free and open to the public. However, interested parties must register here.
